The name of the brand is DeLonghi Magnifica S. It is a rather popular coffee machine. I believe that many machines are made from a mix of plastic, metal and electronic. This coffee machine is no exception. It is designed for durability: It feels very solid and is obviously, like many other coffee machines, made from a mix of plastic and components in metal.
Machines are generally hard to repair, and when they break they are usually thrown away. According to Novum coffee, the Magnifica models focus on “compact design”, reliable technology and durable construction, offering freshly ground coffee through a steel grinder and great user experience for a cheap price!
How can we make it reusable/fully recyclable?
While the DeLonghi Magnifica S has strong features such as compact design, reliable technology and durable construction, it still follows a linear model. To make it more suitable for the Circular Economy, I would suggest that we can break the machine into modules (heating unit, pump, electronics, housing). Each part can be easy to replace or upgrade without having to replace the whole machine. Screws and glue can also be removed to allow disassembly. This machine does not use single use pods, which is a good thing because pods generate much waste.
Customers will pay monthly for access to the machine. DeLonghi will have the ownership, but they will also be responsible for maintenance, upgrades and recycling when it is time. Also, automatic bean delivery using reusable packaging, for example. Perhaps it would be a good idea to separate units for the grinder, pump, heating element, electronic and housing. Instead of replacing the whole machine, we could rather just replace only broken or worn modules.
Current state
The entire machine is replaced.
Circular state
Only the module is replaced.
Is there a way for us to turn the model from a product into an experience?
The experience I have with the DeLonghi Magnifica S feels like a great experience to me — but more in a basic way. A user like me usually just refill the grinder part, fill the water tank and press one of the buttons to fill and refill coffee in the cup. I do believe adding elements to make using the machine feel more special and divine. The machine is very simple in use and has existed on the market for more than 15 years, most likely because of its popularity. Examples of experiences I would like to add to the machine:
A “good morning mode” that walked me through a certain customized program. On the other hand, I am quite okay with the basic experience the DeLonghi already has, with just a set of six main buttons and one rotation wheel for choosing the strongness of the coffee.
Maybe a light or sound cue that makes the start of coffee-making feel ceremonial would be nice to have, as well as a warming pre-brew aroma puff (like an aroma preview).
If the coffee machine was more advanced and had a display I would like to have user profiles (“Magnus’ Morning Roast”, “Weekend Slow Brew”), etc. The coffee machine remembers your habits and suggests variations.
“A light or sound cue that makes the start of coffee‑making feel ceremonial.”
Where does DeLonghi Magnifica S fit in a larger ecosystem?
According to DeLonghi Group’s website, the Magnifica S is a part of a hybrid ecosystem. De’Longhi runs a multi-brand, global setup with 7 R&D centers and 9 production plants, and also uses specialized partners for manufacturing/assembly and finished goods for specific lines. Products are distributed from sourcing centers and hubs worldwide. Their products are sold in more than 120 markets around the globe.
In 2025, Encompass Supply Chain Solutions became De’Longhi’s Main Parts Supply Manager, Authorized Reseller, which Encompass made a press release about on their website. “De’Longhi will now refer buyers to order replacement parts directly from Encompass.” — meaning handling procurement, warehousing, pick pack ship, returns, and warranty/non warranty parts distribution. In 2026 this is more important than ever!
Conclusion
The DeLonghi Magnifica S is very valued for durability, also having freshly made coffee, and a design that works very much forward the product we often see otherwise and experience every day. A circular redesign would have been much better with components such as the following: Modular components, sustainable components, waste free coffee consumption, refurbishment programs, and subscription-based ownership models. The DeLonghi Magnifica S can shift from a traditional appliance to a circular, sustainable service. This transformation can reduce waste, extend product life and support an economic product model overall: It would turn daily coffee rituals into more long-term benefit for everyone (in the environmental way).
